Excavator Program

(Course hours)

32 Hours class Time.
40 Hours Machine operating Time.
19 Hours Fieldwork


This program is approved as a vocational program under the Private Career Colleges Act 2005.


Students will study the following subjects:  
Job Communications - Communication with others in the work environment

Evaluate the Job Conditions
- Inspect the work layout area and apply line, grades and off-set.

Perform Pre-start Inspection - Complete walk-around inspection. Perform daily maintenance.
Lubricate the machine and top off all fluid levels.

Complete Operational Checks - Start the engine. Monitor engine performance, electrical system, brake system, air cleaner indicator and warning systems. Cycle the machine.
Operational Procedures -

Practice safe operating procedures including warm and cold weather starting, stripping, cutting, filling, carrying, lifting and dumping the bucket, loading from a bank or stockpile, peeling and scraping, backfilling, breaking and spreading large piles, and various types of trenching procedures.

Complete Shut Down and Parking Procedures -

Prepare machine for parking and park the machine.
Perform shut-down procedures with the engine running and shut off. Place warning signs around parked equipment.

Perform Machine Adjustment and Maintenance - Track adjustment and machine maintenance procedures.

Load, Transport and Unloading Procedures - Prepare the machine for transport. Load machine on float.

Secure the machine on float and unload the machine.
Introduction to Survey and Layout -

Introduce and familairize students with equipment used by surveyors and contractors for determining grades, depths and other job site measurements.
 
Back-hoe, Bulldozer, excavator, Grader,
plus the AZ at a special rate.
 
Pre- Requisites

Heavy Equipment Course Pre-Requisites:
Equipment Required:
Applicants are required to provide their own Safety Equipment:

- Hard Hat                        - Tear-Away Safety Vest
- Safety Boots                - Eye Protection
- Ear Protection             - Coveralls are also recommended

Age Requirement:

          - 18 yrs old

Education Requirement:  

    - Grade 10 Education Required
      Applicants must provide us with a copy of their OSSD (grade 12) or GED diploma
      or student transcripts to verify minimum of grade 10 education


If education documentation is not available, an equivalency test will be performed in our office  
Licence Requirement:

Heavy Equipment Course applicants are not required to have an Ontario Class G driver's licence to take the course. However, it will be the applicant's responsibility to arrange transportation to alternate training locations as needed.

Having an Ontario Class G licence is a requirement if you are also taking a truck course with your Heavy Equipment Training.

A "Certificate of Training" and wallet card are issued to students who achieve a passing grade.  
There is no actual "heavy equipment licence". This Certification is what is required by employers.
